Shoe Carnival
I bought some shoes for Jaxon at the Shoe Carnival right before school started. They were having a BOGO which is the whole reason I went there. We found 2 pairs we liked. We purchased the first, and the second were ordered from another store. 4 weeks later they called me to tell me the 2nd pair were there. When I went in to get them they asked to see the receipt from the 1st pair I bought. No one ever told me I needed to keep the receipt so I didn't have it. They told me that without the receipt, they couldn't sell me the 2nd pair of shoes for 1/2 off and I would have to pay full price. I explained to them that no one ever told me to keep the receipt and that the whole reason I bought the 1st pair is so I could get the 2nd pair 1/2 off. They were unwilling to help me, and were not sorry at all for my situation. I called the corporate office to see if there was anything that could be done. They were very nice, and got me in touch with the manager of the same store I purchased the shoes from. When I told the manager the situation he basically told me it was all my fault. That he trains his employees to tell customers to keep their receipts and that the only way he would give me the shoes at 1/2 price is if I bring my full bank statement for the past 2 months into his store, so he can look through each item one by one to make sure I haven't already received a pair of shoes half off.
As you can imagine I am pretty bugged by this point. I have dealt with customers as a manager before, and this is absolutely the wrong way to handle a problem. So I tell him this. I tell him I am very frustrated, and that i am disappointed at his unwillingness to help me get this figured out. I tell him that at this point I'm ready to choose a different store next time I have to buy shoes. I never yelled at him, I was very calm, but I did share my feelings of frustration. I tell him that I am going to need to think about what I want to do about the shoes and I'll be in contact with him soon.
So a week goes by, and I'm feeling really bad about the whole situation. I mean we are both adults right? We should be able to figure this out. So I decide to go into the store and talk with him face to face. Before I go in I sit in the car for about 5 minutes thinking about what I'm going to say. I want to be nice, but I also want to make it clear that he needs to help me figure this out.
So I walk in the door and say "Hi my name is Steffani Dastrup. We talked last week on the phone. I really wanted to come in here today and talk to you personally. I really want to figure this out with you" I was super sweet, but told him I wasn't comfortable showing him my entire bank statement for the past few months, but that I would show him the one transaction that showed me purchasing the full price shoes. At this point he cuts me off and tells me he doesn't need to see anything. He will just ring up the shoes for me for the 1/2 price. I started to smile and say "Wow! Thank you! I really appreciate that!" When he continued on to say this...
"I will give you the shoes 1/2 off, but as you expressed in your phone call last week, this has been a frustrating experience for you, and we feel it would be best for you to take your future transactions elsewhere."
At this point my jaw literally dropped. I was so shocked at what just came out of his mouth. I said "Excuse me? Are you telling me not to come back?" And he said "We just feel when there are this many problems with one customer it is best to let them go."
I seriously thought I was being punked. I looked around the room for Ashton Kutcher to pop up behind the shoe shelves! But nope. This guy was completely serious. I was absolutely speechless. I think I said something to the effect of "Wow, well that is just ridiculously rude!" I told him that feeling frustrated with my experience is nothing I should feel sorry about. And that there was never any point where I lost my temper or treated him disrespectfully. I told him that it is his job as the manager to handle problems that customers have, not ask them never to come back. He responded with "Well, I am doing the best I can."
There was really nothing left to say, so I told him to keep the shoes and that he would get his wish and that I would never be coming back. I also told him I would be filing a complaint with the corporate office. HIs final words to me were " You do what you need to do."
I literally laughed as I walked out the door. I just couldn't believe this was really happening. I called the Shoe Carnival Headquarters immediately, and talked with the nicest man. He apologized profusely, and said in his 15 years with the company he has never heard of an employee, let alone a manager acting this way. He said after only 10 minutes on the phone with me, he could tell I was absolutely not the problem here. He helped me file a formal complaint, and promised me it would be looked into and taken very seriously.
So there you go. Didn't know you had such a rebel did you? Ha! One thing I never thought I'd cross off my bucket list. "Getting kicked out of a business for unruly behavior. :)
